Professional Development Meeting - Adding Lean Six Sigma Analysis Tools to Your Business Analysis Toolbox with Clayton Taylor

  • Provide an overview of the Lean Six Sigma methodology, and where it originated.
  • Explain how Lean and Six Sigma are used in combination to make breakthrough improvements in organizations and the quality of products and services.
  • Show how Lean Six Sigma and Business Analysis use similar approaches to developing an understanding of business needs and identifying areas of opportunity for change and improvement. Additionally, show where Lean Six Sigma and Business Analysis differ in approach.
  • Provide an overview of the most common Lean Six Sigma tools and how they are applied to develop robust products and services in an organization.
  • Show how a background in Lean Six Sigma can augment the Business Analyst’s skill set.

Overview of Presentation:
It is often thought that Lean Six Sigma is solely manufacturing focused, and has limited use outside of that type of operational environment. Through this presentation, Clayton Taylor will discuss how this breakthrough methodology is being used in a variety of service and non-manufacturing industries, as well as production facilities. The presentation provides an overview of Lean Six Sigma, its principles and tools; and will show how the methodology aligns with, and can be used to augment Business Analysis methods. The presentation will conclude with a discussion of the types of training available to people who want to become certified practitioners, and provide guidance on where to find the best training.

Clayton Taylor, MBA, is the Director of the Business and Finance Organizational Performance Office in the Office of the Executive Vice President, Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer at Arizona State University. His office consults with nine diverse Business and Finance operational areas to lower costs, improve operational efficiency and provide the highest quality customer experience to internal and external customers. The Organizational Performance Office also provides support to academic and research units across the university.

Mr. Taylor is a Certified Six Sigma Master Black Belt with experience deploying Lean Six Sigma and process improvement initiatives in a variety of service organizations. He is an experienced team and project manager who is skilled at coaching, developing and motivating work teams to achieve high productivity and quality goals. He has designed and implemented numerous innovative processes which have enabled organizations to grow, support customers, and improve profitability. Mr. Taylor is a co-creator and Master Facilitator of the ASU Spark Method™ for rapid innovation.

Mr. Taylor is an industry subject matter expert in strategic planning, business operations, leadership and management practices, continuous improvement, customer service, quality, and employee development.  He is an experienced training professional and facilitator, who has designed and led numerous training programs including Lean Six Sigma Black Belt certification, Lean Six Sigma for Service Green Belt certification, Lean Six Sigma for Service Yellow Belt certification, Service Operations and Process Improvement Boot Camp, ASU Spark Method™ Facilitator Training, Supervisory Academy, Above and Beyond Customer Service, and Real Colors®.  Additionally, he has created and led various training classes in strategic planning, business skills, process improvement tools, and employee motivation.

Before joining Arizona State University, Mr. Taylor worked as a Six Sigma Black Belt and Project Manager for retail customer contact and credit centers, managed customer service teams in the retail and airline industry, and worked in national television media sales. Mr. Taylor has provided consulting services to a variety of organizations spanning the education, service, commercial, and manufacturing industries. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Management from Northern Kentucky University and his Master of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix.
